The Changing Pronunciation of Leisure

The Changing Pronunciation of Leisure The Changing Pronunciation of Leisure The Changing Pronunciation of Leisure By Maeve Maddox At the point when I was around ten years of age, my auntie gave me a membership to a Disney comic. I recall one issue in which Donald Duck and his nephews had a fortune map. Caught saying that he was looking for covered fortune, Donald attempted to mislead the lowlife whod heard him by guaranteeing that what hed truly said was looking for rushed relaxation. That was in the Fifties. When the recreation suit rage struck in the Seventies, very few Americans were articulating relaxation to rhyme with measure. On second thought, I dont know about any individual who articulates covered to rhyme with rushed. Here are the present American ways to express these words: covered [bä•räd] rushed [hã »rä] treasure [trä•zhé™r] relaxation [läzhé™r] albeit a few people despite everything state [lä•zhé™r] What elocution changes have you seen since your were a youngster? Here are a few citations from papers that show the utilization of this word: travel organization sells weeklong, little gathering outings to Costa Rica, Morocco and Nicaragua. The excursions are part relaxation, part administration: schedules incorporate somewhere in the range of two and three days of good cause work, in a joint effort with a neighborhood (www.nytimes.com) A Tuscan get-away gives explorers a possibility for a urban experience with visits to the workmanship exhibition halls of Florence, the engineering of Pisa and the conventions of Siena. Tuscany additionally is a goal for a relaxed outing that wanders through the open country, stops at wineries for tastings or takes a relaxation break in a spa town. How to Use the Law of Attraction for Improving Your Life

How to Use the Law of Attraction for Improving Your Life © Shutterstock.com | T. L. FurrerCan you imagine having the power to visualize your ideas in your thoughts and having them manifest in your life? Can you picture yourself thinking of good things happening to you in your life and then having those good things actually happen? That is the power of the Law of Attraction. While it may sound like a far-fetched idea to some, this type of positive mentality and thinking process can work wonders for your professional and personal life. If you are open-minded and are willing to let positive things happen to you in your life, then continue reading this article and you will be amazed at the things discussed here.At some point in our lives, we feel very anxious and stressed from the pressures of life. Maybe you are having a bad day at the office or your personal relationships are crumbling. If you let these negative thoughts fester in your mind a little too long, then odds are you will continue to experience bad things because you will attract t hem.Your attitude determines if you will be happy because you can choose to be happy. We will show you how the Law of Attraction can make you a happier person in more ways than one.WHAT IS THE LAW OF ATTRACTION?The Law of Attraction is a philosophical concept of “like energy attracts like energy.” If you think positive, then you will look at things in your life in a brighter light. If you have negative thoughts, then you will see everything in a bad way.Let’s look at it from a scientific point of view. While electrical charges prefer to be attracted to charges of the opposite nature (positive attracts negative, but like charges repel each other), magnetic materials are attracted to other magnetic. Case in point, a magnet that is made out of iron will immediately attract iron because iron is a magnetic material itself. In addition, the magnet made out of iron will attract nickel as well because nickel also happens to be a magnetic material. Magnetic materials are attracted to e ach other.Humans are like living magnets because we are able to attract people who are like-minded. They say that opposites attract but we beg to differ. Think about the person you are dating now or are married to. Sure, they are not carbon copies of you and you dearly appreciate the differences between you but for the most part this person is quite similar to you. That is how you click. That is how you resonate. The same could be said of your friends. Why do you get along with them? Because for the most part, you have more similarities than differences. You may have been unaware of it at the time, but you subconsciously applied the Law of Attraction when establishing these bonds with people.Besides creating bonds with people, the Law of Attraction plays a key role in how we view the world. If you choose to be negative and always see the bad in things that happen to you, then you will always be angry at the situation. However, if you choose to be positive and see the good things that could come out of a seemingly bad situation, then you will have a positive outlook on life. It is really true what they say â€" “Every cloud has a silver lining.”If you remain positive, then good things will happen to you even if you are temporarily experiencing something bad. You can attract exactly what your mind and heart desires.METHODS OF USING LAW OF ATTRACTIONWe will show you how this mentality and belief can actually improve your way of life. For each of these techniques, you will read examples of applying these techniques to make a tangible difference to your life.Think Positive ThoughtsYour thoughts determine your feelings, your feelings determine your actions, and your actions ultimately determine the life you lead. You can choose to be happy and successful if you think about it. Just consider this, if you are down on your luck in life and you constantly think things like “I am not worth it” or “I don’t deserve to be happy”, then odds are you will act in a way that makes those thoughts come true.Thinking negative will always result in negative results. If you walk around sulking and brooding as if you have a dark cloud hovering above you, then you will most likely attract other people who are brooding as well. However, if you wake up with the thought that you are going to be happy today, then there is a high chance that you will have good experiences that day.By thinking that you are confident, empowered, and capable, you can actually accomplish many great things that you may not have thought were possible. If you start to doubt yourself by thinking you are incapable, weak, and unfit to do anything, then you will never give your 100%. You have simply forfeited without even trying. You have to make an effort and try. That begins with your thoughts because your thoughts govern your actions.Choose to be HappyFor instance, if you are feeling happiness, love, passion, compassion, and hope, then positive things will happen to you. However, if you are feeling anger, fear, depression, and guilt, then negative things will happen to you. According to psychology, the things that happen to us easily sway our mental state and we react compulsively at times. You do not have to react to every little thing that happens to you, especially the bad things. For example, you just left the office and you are walking to your car in the parking lot and see that there are bird droppings on your car. Now you could react in an angry and enraged manner, or you could choose not to. You can control your temper and find ways to solve your problem. Simply going to the car wash to clean your car will make it go away and it will be as good as new.Anybody can be PositiveWe will not deceive you and say that this comes naturally to everybody. That is far from it! As humans, we tend to react to everything a little too quickly and we fail to see the bigger picture at times. Instead of being short-tempered, we should be calm, cool, and collected if we experience anything bad in life.We know that it is much easier said than done, but now is the time to practice. If you promise yourself to not be so negative in the face of adversity but instead approach things in a positive manner, then you will notice your life improve. Your mental state will be healthier and you will feel the tangible difference in your personal and professional life when you interact with people. Anybody can think positively, even in the face of hardship. Here is a cool talk with Tony Robbins on the Law of Attraction. Have an Attitude of GratitudeNo matter what you are going through in life, no matter how bad things may be in your life, find ways to put it in perspective and be grateful for whatever you have. Even if it is very little, appreciate whatever you are able to hold on to and cherish it to the fullest because there are so many people on earth who are not fortunate enough to be in your shoes and have what you have. Gratitude instantly makes us feel bette r about our lives.Be Grateful for your Friends and FamilyFor example, if you are going through a tough break up, it can have serious adverse effects on your mental state. You had a very long and strong bond with someone whom you let into your heart and mind. Now, you are in a situation where they no longer occupy a place in your heart. This can be very difficult to accept initially and many people ruin their lives because of it. We want to say that you do have other people who are a very important people in your life â€" your very near and dear friends and family. Your parents will always have your back because they are family and your closest friends will always be there for you for emotional support. They reassure you that things are going to be okay. That is the moment you realize that you still have people you love. When you think about it, there are people who do not even have a family. They live in war torn nations where many people are sadly deceased and many young adults live on their own without any sort of support. These poor, unfortunate souls have almost nothing to hold on to apart from their dear lives. There is almost nobody there for them, yet you have your friends and family.Maybe the love of your life has walked away, but there are people who are still standing by your side. Be thankful for the people who support you and make your stronger every day. Be grateful for having them in your life.Be Thankful for your JobAnother example we would like to present is a professional one. Imagine you are an electronics engineer who works at a mega corporation and have served the company for several years. During your years of service, you have accomplished plenty and successfully delivered projects before the deadline and with great output, too. However, maybe your boss does not reward you enough with some sort of raise or give you any recognition for your efforts. Instead, somebody else is promoted and it makes you livid. Situations like this arise a lot in the office and it infuriates plenty of people, but it does not have to make you very negative. You can look at the bright side and be grateful for having the job that you love in the first place. So many people around the world just work for the sake of working or work dead end jobs with no prospects of career growth. Some people do not even have jobs to begin with! If you are in your 30s and you have a job you like, be very grateful. In these troubling economic times, far too many middle-aged people are not able to get jobs. You have one so show some gratitude. Sure, you may not be treated the way you ought to be but think about it like this â€" you are doing what you like to do. If you look at the positive side of it and are thankful for what you have achieved, then everything else becomes insignificant. By being grateful, negative things will not have an effect on you.Visualize your DreamsTolkien gave us the wonderful world of Middle Earth in the Lord of the Rings, Martin gave us the amazing kingdom of Westeros in A Song of Ice and Fire, and Lewis gave us the magical realm of Wonderland in Alice in Wonderland. These famous fantasy writers had ideas and stories that they wanted to tell the world but before they could put pen to paper (these stories were created years before the invention of the computer), they had to visualize their dreams to make sense of it. Now we know that most of you reading this are not aspiring writers so you may be wondering, “What does this have to do with the Law of Attraction?”You see, you need to be able to see yourself happy and successful down the road, even if you are not feeling like it at this very moment. You need to use your powers of imagination to visualize the things you see for yourself and then lay out the plan to get there. You must create your fantasy world now so that you know how awesome it will be when you actually get it.Wow. This video crushed my mind. Totally awesome and inspiring. The Power of ImaginationIf you are able to visualize everything that you desire in extensive detail, it makes it so much easier for you to manifest your dreams and make them a reality. Your desires and wishes do not need to live only in your head; you have the power to make them happen. In order to do so, you must first clearly visualize the things you truly want.Everybody has dreams and aspirations, so visualize them by picturing them in your head as if you have already achieved them. Imagine all the good things you plan on doing when your dreams come true. It makes you happier and brings a ton of joy in your life. That elated feeling makes you motivated to go out there and do the things necessary to make it happen. It really does help to picture yourself already in your desired position beforehand since it gets you pumped.Paint your Dreams like an ArtistThere is a process to visualizing your dreams. No matter what it is you are trying to achieve, personally or professionally, it really helps to imagine tha t you are an artist who paints on a canvas. You must start with an empty canvas by clearing your mind. You need to be fresh and slowly add things onto your canvas. These individual elements are the pieces of your final art. They are the things that you actually want.Next, you need to put yourself on the canvas, interacting with the elements you added earlier. There are so many possibilities â€" a new house, a new profession, a car, a healthier body, higher studies abroad, etc. The options are limitless and you can do anything you want to do.As you vividly create and visualize your art, you realize that you badly want it. That is when you picture the actions you need to take to reach your destination. Without actions, you can never accomplish anything. You need to see yourself actually doing certain things to get to where you want to be.Write down your GoalsWhen you have successfully envisioned yourself achieving your goals, then you are one step closer to improving your life and get ting what you truly desire. We recommend writing down your goals because studies show that when people write their goals down, they are more likely to give it more thought and work harder to make them happen. Do you plan to travel to Japan? Write it down.Do you want to start your own business? Plan it out. Do you want to lose weight and get fit? Create a workout plan. Writing things down may not be as popular as it is today as it was a couple of decades ago (due to the ubiquity of computers), but nothing comes close to using a pen and paper. Some of the most successful people have used the power of visualization to realize their dreams. Michael Phelps (world’s most decorated swimmer), Steve Jobs (greatest tech innovator of our times), and Elon Musk (renowned visionary changing the world) all envisioned greatness before they attained it. They believed in themselves and had plans to reach greatness. You can, too.Never forget your “Why”In order to attract the good things you want in your life, you need to know “what” they are in the first place. These are your goals; the things you want to attract to make you happier in life are the things you are trying to attain. When you were visualizing yourself already having these things (see the previous point), you also envision “how” you can get to that state. You have a goal in mind and are already planning how to make things work in your favor. You create a system that you will adhere to in order to get what you want. However, there is something that many people overlook â€" “Why” do I want this? What are reasons for you to pursue that goal? What motivates you to go out of your way to go for it? How will this add some benefit or utility in your life?If you are able to answer these tough questions, then you have an incentive and a motive to pursue your goals. Everybody needs a drive because without it, you will always be inhibited.Feelings Enhanced by InspirationsSimon Sinek, an author and speaker on lea dership and management, delivered an impassioned TED Talk where he discusses how amazing companies are able to connect with people and sell their products. He talks about what inspires great leaders. You may be wondering, “How does that concern a person like me who is not a corporation?” You may not be a company but you have things that inspire you, too.The things that inspire you incite some feelings within you and if there is anything you have learnt in this article, it is that your feelings are very strong. You can do amazing things if you have positive feelings about something you truly want. The things you want inspire something in you. That is your reason for wanting it. That is your “why.” Connecting it back to your “why” will always elevate your feelings for your goals and at some point, your intangible feelings will become tangible and you will be able to smell and taste your dreams coming true as well. The Law of Attraction is a proven science and just like any other form of science, it is based on reasoning. When you have the reasons for doing what you do, then you can justify your actions to achieving your goals and do not have to doubt yourself. The ones who doubt themselves are usually the ones who do not know why they are doing what they are doing. Many people work jobs without knowing why it is that they are there. Many people study subjects at school without knowing why it is they are studying them. When you can identify your reasons for doing what you want to do, then you are able to apply yourself 100% and give your best efforts. Then, and only then, can you expect to get the best results for your pursuit of happiness.CONCLUSIONThe Law of Attraction is an old philosophical ideology to make you happier by your very thoughts. Though its popularity waned a bit in the late 20th century, it grew in prominence in 2006 with the book The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. It teaches us how to make our lives better and make us feel fulfilled and satisf ied by harnessing our thoughts and realizing them. By being positive, you will attract positive things in your life. It gives support to the claim “like attracts like.”You can make good things happen to you if you think about them more. Your mood and attitude is governed by your thoughts so the easiest way to improve your life is to think happy thoughts. We would like to leave you with some quotes that have a very deep meaning and are applicable in this context. We hope you learn a lot from them and apply the lesson of the citation in your daily life to see amazing results. They reinforce the notion of being positive and optimistic.“If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it, then I can achieve it” â€" Muhammad Ali“When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it” â€" The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Disorganized students often forget homework, have messy desks, cannot keep track of their materials and have poor time management skills. Teachers can help these students by providing a structured routine along with strategies to keep them organized. Use the following tips to help your disorganized student manage their responsibilities. 1. Set up a Routine By providing structure in the classroom the disorganized student will have no choice but to stay organized. To lessen their confusion, place a schedule in their folder or tape one to their desk. This way, the student can use it as a reference throughout the day. 2. Use a Checklist A checklist is a great tool for a disorganized student because it shows them the expectations that they need to accomplish for the day in a visual format. For younger students, have the list already prepared for them and go over it with the student each morning. For older students, provide strategies for prioritizing their own checklists.   3. Monitor Homework Encourage parenteral support by writing a letter to parents describing your homework policy. Require that each night after the homework is completed, it is signed by a parent and returned to school the following day. Each week set aside time in your class schedule so students can complete this task. Brainstorm organizational ideas with the students on specific ways they can keep their desks tidy. Make the list visible in the classroom so each week they can have access to it. Suggest that they label materials for easy access and throw away items they no longer use. 5. Use Memory Aids Memory aids are a helpful way to remember tasks and materials. Walmart Corporation s Labor And Employee Relations

Introduction As stated on the corporate website (2017), â€Å"Walmart is the largest retailer in the world, where 2.3 million associates meet the needs of more than 260 million customers every week.† These numbers are huge, and with so many locations around the globe, they have had allegations been made by employees regarding their dissatisfaction about poor work conditions, gender discrimination, low wages, poor benefits, and inadequate health care. Walmart has been criticized for its policies against labor unions and this issue has prompted public outrage, (Johansson, 2005) which is of great concern for the market. The company has also faced criticism for being anti-union, but it has claimed that it is rather pro-associate, whereby employees†¦show more content†¦Walmart however claims that their managers can handle complaints and grievance and that their employees do not need to pay a union to advocate for them. Walmart management views labor unions as negative (Ali, 2015), but if utilized correctly, it can actually have a positive effect on their business. Strong labor relations can make a business more successful in the long run and can help both employers and employees. Managers sometimes get the chills when they think of unions organizing in their businesses and sometimes adopt an adverse approach to any existing labor group. However, organizations can reap several benefits from the presence of a labor union if management and the labor unions work together toward the same goals. When employees contribute into the production process for a service, the quality increases as there is greater commitment on the part of those making or delivering the end-product. Dealing with labor unions improves employee satisfaction as they can rely on them as their voice to speak to the employers (Arthur, 2017). What Are The Key Issues Regarding Employee And Labor Relations? Over the years, Walmart has been at the center of controversies with regards, its low wages; overtime pay abuses, employee benefits, gender discrimination, negative impact on small business, immense dealings with China, tax avoidance and much more (Crofoot, 2012). The Personal Attack The Logical Fallacy of Argumentum Free Essays

The term â€Å"ad hominem† is a Latin phrase that translates to â€Å"against the man† (â€Å"Ad hominem†).   It is one of several logical fallacies that may appear (intentionally or otherwise) in the rhetorical mode of writing or speaking known as Argument.   The use of the ad hominem indicates that an argument (or counter-argument) is focusing not on the issue or cause, but on the issue’s presenter, and it generally takes the form of a personal attack of the presenter’s character (â€Å"Introduction to Ad Hominem Fallacies†). We will write a custom essay sample on The Personal Attack: The Logical Fallacy of Argumentum or any similar topic only for you Order Now The soundest ad hominem attacks are made up of two steps.   The first step is to discredit the speaker/presenter/sponsor, and the second step is to imply that because the speaker/presenter/sponsor is a â€Å"bad† person, the issue or cause must be bad as well (â€Å"Introduction to Ad Hominem Fallacies†). For example, prior to the last local election, I attended a debate between two city council candidates regarding a public school bond measure.   Having read about the issue, I was aware that the facts proved the bond’s cost would far outweigh the anticipated minimal benefits—benefits that had not been shown to occur in similar communities.   I had seen no evidence to support any logical argument to encourage citizen’s to support the bond issue, so I was not surprised when one candidate turned the factual debate into a personal attack of his opponent. The argument: that his opponent had no school-aged children and because of this, his opponent has no vested interest in the success or failure of the community’s public school system. Obviously the candidate who was attacking his opponent (via the ad hominem) hoped that people would equate his opponent’s lacking school-aged children with an inability to assess a public school bond issue properly. The logical counter to this fallacious argument would be to return the focus to the facts: if  passed, would the school bond result in improvements or would it not?   If passed, would the  costs of the school bond be worth the benefits or not?   I would quickly point out that whether or  not one has children has no bearing on one’s ability to assess the fiscal impact of a set of facts,  and I would add to that, that if this were a logical supposition, that only those who had children  should be allowed to vote on the bond issue as obviously only those with children have  the capacity to make a sound decision in this area. Abolishing Abortion essays

Abolishing Abortion essays I choose to write my bill about abortion. Because first I believe that the killing of an unborn baby is murder. And second I believe that the constitution protects all living things even unborn babies. Abortion is wrong and killing an unborn child is murder. This is not an issue of an object or a thing it is about human life. Who has the right to say what a human is. No one has the right to take the life of an innocent person. A baby is a separate human being, different from his or her mother. Each child has its own special genetic identity, gender, heartbeat, brain waves, eyes, hands, and feet. An unborn babys heart begins to beat only eighteen to twenty-five days after it is conceived, and brain activity starts after only forty. Most abortions occur after the fetus exhibits measurable brain waves. Isnt stopping a humans heart from beating murder? Society is moving backward when it lets a baby to be killed. That child could grow up to be a doctor or an astronaut or a president. Murder is the worst of crime of all, because it deprives a person of their potential life. A fetus is capable of life. So it is murder to deprive a fetus of all of its potential life. By not giving them a chance how do we know what they could become? Women have certain rights over their bodies just as men do, but they shouldnt when it affect the rights of others. Abortion directly involves the rights of at least two people, the mother and the unborn child. There is no reason to kill a child none what so ever. Some people might say the world population is one reason that babies should be aborted. But this is not true, every 8 seconds a child is born and someone dies every 11 seconds so the US population only grows at 1% a year. Some mother claims they abort their baby because they can afford or take care of it. This problem can be solved by adoption. What would a mother like to remember more: I gave my baby ...

Discuss some of the reasons why the Greeks were successful in every Essay

Discuss some of the reasons why the Greeks were successful in every major battle during the Persian Wars (490-79 BC) - Essay Example The Persian Empire under the rule of Xerxes and Darius were defeated. There was a series of battles which took place in the Persian Wars, some lost by the Greeks, and some won. Following is a short account of how the Greeks managed to win most of the battles in the Persian Wars.1i The Siege of Naxos took place in 499 BC. This battle marks the start of the Persian Wars which lasted for about fifty years. The Milesian tyrant Aristagoras had the full support of Darius the Great of the Persian Empire in the futile attempt to take over the island of Naxos in the name of the Persian Empire. This attempt of Aristagoras however failed horribly. Aristocrats who had been exiled from the island of Naxos and were looking for a way to go back to their land contacted Aristagoras. Aristagoras saw this as an opportunity to make his position in the Miletus stronger. For assistance in this matter, Darius the Great and Artaphernes the local satrap were consulted and plans were made to conquer Naxos. The Persians agreed to g on the mission of conquering Naxos and a force of 200 triremes was assigned to Megabates. The mission however soon turned out to be a complete disaster. On the way to Naxos, Aristagoras and Artaphernes broke out into a quarrel and the Naxians were informed a bout the oncoming force beforehand, quite possibly by Artaphernes. Upon the arrival of Persians at the gate of Naxos, they encountered Naxos as a city which was prepared to the fullest to undertake and go through a siege. The attackers were obliged to attack in spite of the great defense as they had travelled a long way but after four months of no success in the battlefield they ran out of money and resources and had to retreat back to Asia Minor. Aristagoras sensed that after this disaster he would no longer be appointed to rule and so he turned the people of Ionia against Darius the Great and rebelled against him. The Ionian Revolt and the failed attempt to conquer Naxos angered Darius

Managerial Economics and the Airline Industry Essay

Managerial Economics and the Airline Industry - Essay Example In line with the high unemployment rate in U.S., millions of the Americans could no longer afford to spend their savings on leisure purposes which will require them to spend a large portion of their savings on air fares. Based on the students knowledge on managerial economics, economic tools and concept will be used in weighing the pros and cons of recommended solution on how the U.S. airline industry could avoid filing bankruptcy. Considering the slow growth in the U.S. economic condition combined with the oil price hike in the global market, merger and acquisition should be approved by the U.S. Department of Justice in terms of minimizing and preventing the number of cases wherein these businesses would file bankruptcy. because of the continuously increasing oil prices in the world market. In line with this matter, the only way to make the airline operational cost to go down is by making its available human resources more efficient. The benefits of allowing business merger among the U.S. Airline Companies includes the fact that existing airline companies will be able to enjoy the benefits of economies of scale. In the process of merging two airline companies into one, the airline business will have more power in terms of maximizing the use of its human resources and assets aside from having a bigger market share in the industry. During the reorganizational process, airline managers will have the option to select and retain their best talents while laying off employees that do not have sufficient knowledge and skills in airline operations. By doing so, a newly merged airline company will be able to cut down its operational costs by making its human resources more efficient. Basically, cutting down the operational costs will enable the newly merged company to offer a more competitive air fare prices as compared to its competitors. For this reason, there is a

The Qingming Festival

The Qingming Festival The Qingming Festival, Clear Bright Festival, Ancestors Day or Tomb Sweeping Day is a traditional Chinese festival on the 104th day after the winter solstice (or the 15th day from the Spring Equinox), usually occurring around April 5 of the Gregorian calendar (see Chinese calendar). Astronomically it is also a solar term (See Qingming). The Qingming festival falls on the first day of the fifth solar term, named Qingming. Its name denotes a time for people to go outside and enjoy the greenery of springtime (TÃ  qÄ «ng, treading on the greenery) and tend to the graves of departed ones. Qingming has been regularly observed as a statutory public holiday in Taiwan and in the Chinese jurisdictions of Hong Kong and Macau. Its observance was reinstated as a public holiday in mainland China in 2008, after having been previously suppressed by the ruling Communist Party in 1949. Tomb Sweeping Day and Clear Bright Festival are the most common English translations of Qingming Festival. Tomb Sweeping Day is used in several English language newspapers published in Taiwan. Qinming Festival originated from Hanshi Day (literally, Day with cold food only), memorial day for Jie Zitui (or Jie Zhitui,). He died in 636 BC in the Spring and Autumn Period. He was one of many followers of Duke Wen of Jin before he became Duke. One time during Duke Wen of Jins 19 years of exile, they didnt have any food, and Jie prepared some meat soup for Duke Wen of Jin, who enjoyed it a lot and wondered where Jie got the soup. It turned out Jie cut a piece of meat from his own thigh to make the soup. Duke Wen of Jin was so moved, he promised to reward him on day. However Jie was not the type of people who sought rewards, instead, he just wanted to help Duke Wen of Jin to return to Jin to become Duke. Once Duke Wen of Jin succeeded the throne of Duke, Jie resigned and stayed away from the Duke. Duke Wen of Jin rewarded the people who helped him in the decades, but for some reason, he forgot to reward Jie, who by then had moved into the forest with his mother. Duke Wen of Jin we nt to the forest, but couldnt find Jie. Heeding suggestions from his officials, Duke Wen of Jin ordered to set the forest in fire to force out Jie, however, Jie died in the fire. Feeling so remorse, Duke Wen of Jin ordered the 3 days without fire to honor Jies memory. The county where Jie died is still called Jiexiu (literally meaning the place Jie resting forever). Qingming has a tradition stretching back more than 2,500 years.[4] Its origin is credited to the Tang Emperor Xuanzong in 732. Wealthy citizens in China were reportedly holding too many extravagant and ostentatiously expensive ceremonies in honour of their ancestors. Emperor Xuanzong, seeking to curb this practice, declared that respects could be formally paid at ancestors graves only on Qingming.[5] The observance of Qingming found a firm place in Chinese culture and continued uninterrupted for over two millennia. In 1949 the Communist Party of China repealed the holiday. Observance of Qingming remained suppressed until 2008, when the Party reinstated the holiday. The Qingming Festival is an opportunity for celebrants to remember and honor their ancestors at grave sites. Young and old pray before the ancestors, sweep the tombs and offer food, tea, wine, chopsticks, (joss) paper accessories, and/or libation to the ancestors. The rites have a long tradition in Asia, especially among farmers. Some people carry willow branches with them on Qingming, or put willow branches on their gates and/or front doors. They believe that willow branches help ward off the evil spirit that wanders on Qingming. Also on Qingming people go on family outings, start the spring plowing, sing, dance, and Qingming is a time where young couples start courting. Another popular thing to do is fly kites (in shapes of animals or characters from Chinese opera). Others carry flowers instead of burning paper, incense or firecrackers as is common. The holiday is often marked by people paying respects to those who died in events considered sensitive in China. The April Fifth Movement and the Tiananmen Incident were major events on Qingming that took place in the history of the Peoples Republic of China. When Premier Zhou Enlai died in 1976, thousands visited him during the festival to pay their respects. Many also pay respects to victims of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 and the graves of Zhao Ziyang and Yang Jia in areas where rights of free expression are generally recognized, as in Hong Kong; in most areas of China such observances are suppressed and all public mention of such subjects is taboo.[4][6] In Taiwan the national holiday is observed on April 5 because the ruling Kuomintang moved it to that date in commemoration of the death of Chiang Kai-shek on April 5. The holiday is nevertheless observed in the traditional manner, with families gathering to honour their own ancestors, visit and maintain their family shri nes, and share traditional meals. Despite having no holiday status, the overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asian nations such as those in Singapore and Malaysia take this festival seriously; deep in heritage, rituals and strict decorum. Qing Ming in Malaysia is an elaborate family function or a clan feast (usually organized by the respective clan association) to commemorate and honor their late relations at grave site and their distant ancestry of China at home altar, clan temple or a makeshift altar in a Buddhist or Taoist temple. For the oversea community, Qing ming festival is very much a family heritage and at the same, a family obligation. The overseas Chinese see this festival as a time to reflect, honor and give thanks to their forefathers. The oversea Chinese normally visit the graves of their late relations at the nearest weekend of the actual date. According to the ancient custom, grave site veneration is only feasible 10 days before and after Qingming Festival. If the visit is not on the actual date normally veneration before Qingming is encouraged. Qingming Festival in Malaysia and Singapore normally started early in the morning, with the ancestral veneration at home altar- paying respect to the distant ancestors from China. This would be followed by visiting the graves of their close relations in the country. Some would take the extent of filial piety to visit the graves of their ancestors in mainland China. Traditionally, family will burn paper money (paper have imprint of money) and paper replica of some material good such car, maid, home, phone, and etc. In Chinese culture, even though a person died, he/she may still need all of these in the afterlife. There should always an even number of dishes put in front of the grave and a bowl of rice with incense stick upright. Then, family members start taking turn to bow before the tomb of the ancestors. Bowing will go in order, which starts with the most senior member of the family and so on. After the ancestor worship at the gr ave site, the whole family or the whole clan would be feasting the food and drinks they brought for the worship at the site or nearby gardens in the memorial park, signifying family reunion with the ancestors. Hanshi, the day before Qingming, was created by Chonger, the Duke Wen of the state of Jin during the Spring and Autumn Period. The festival was established after Chonger accidentally burned to death his personal friend and servant Jie Zhitui (or Jie Zitui) and Jie Zituis mother. Chonger ordered the hills they were hiding in set on fire in hopes that Jie Zitui would return to his service, but the fire killed Jie and his mother. On Hanshi, people were not allowed to use fires to heat up food, thus nicknaming it the Cold Food Festival. Eventually, 300 years ago, the Hanshi celebration was combined with the Qingming festival, but later abandoned by most people. The Qingming festival holiday holds significance in Chinese Tea culture since this specific day divides the fresh green teas by their picking dates. Green teas made from leaves picked before this date is given the prestigious pre-qingming or mingqian designation which commands a much higher price tag. These teas are prized for having much lighter and subtler aromas than those picked after the festival.(I download the last two paragraph from the internet)

Common Traits of the Filipinos Essay

Common Traits It is difficult to define and ascertain the very core of what it is to be a Filipino. History tells us that the Filipinos as we know now had an untraceable origin. All that we can do now is to determine the common traits that are common to all of the Filipinos. Common traits among Filipinos can be traced throughout its existence, from the pre-colonial era up to the present era that we have now. There is something that is particularly common and at the same time unique from among all of us as oppose to different races from Asia. And from this point of view we can depart and establish in some commonalities what it is to be a Filipino which is unique in particular throughout Asia and in general throughout the world. A. Hospitality One of the common traits of a Filipino is the word Hospitality. Hospitality comes from the Latin word, â€Å"Hospes†meaning â€Å"Host†, â€Å"guest†, or â€Å"stranger†. Hospes is formed from hostis, which means â€Å"stranger† or â€Å"enemy† which is synonymous to hostility. In a nutshell, Hospitality means welcoming the guest, stranger, or even the enemy into your own house. According to Derrida there two(2) types of hospitality, the first one is Conditional Hospitality, and the second one is the Absolute Hospitality. In the vernacular language, Conditional Hospitality means, you welcome the stranger, guest, or even the hostile within the bounds of condition e. g like they should only sleep in the master bedroom and only sleep in the couch or sala, they cannot go into the bedroom or they should not touch anything. In other words, they are bound to certain restrictions. On the other hand, in contrast to Conditional Hospitality, Absolute hospitality is a form of welcoming the other with open arms up to the point of embracing the other unconditionally. Absolute hospitality knows no boundaries, in fact, welcoming the other might be dangerous because this other’s personality is unascertainable, maybe he is a convict or any other psychopath but absolute hospitality will welcome any other stranger that will knock into your own homes even if such stranger would kill you. And this Absolute hospitality is the kind of hospitality that is present and predominant among Filipinos, this is a kind of hospitality that is selfless at its purest up to the point of even sacrificing his own family just for the sake of the visitor or guest. And this was clearly depicted by the historian Teodoro A. Agoncillo when he wrote that: â€Å"Perhaps you happen to drop in at an unholy hour of the day or night. Sensing that you are hungry, he prepares the best food for you, ignoring the fact that there would not be enough for the next supper for his family. Meanwhile, he gives you something with which you could eat whiles away your time. You hear him or his wife puttering about the kitchen desperately hurrying up the preparation of the food in order not to keep you waiting. There is always a sense of urgency in his movements, for he does not want to inconvenience you. He makes you feel that he is honored by your invasion of his privacy at an unholy hour of the night. † This Absolute hospitality is the one that is being misunderstood by foreigners, especially by the Spanish colonizers, who thought that such trait is an embodiment of inferiority and obsequiousness. And only that such trait is also prone to abuses made up by the Foreign colonizers which proceeded to tell their hearers that they fell victims to the wiles of the Filipino women. B. Close Family ties The family is one of the oldest and most important social institutions on earth in it is the basic institution of the government, all starts from and within the family it is the primordial institution of our society. With this, it is noteworthy to mention Anthropologist Margaret Mead, she based her research and affirmed the centrality of the nuclear family in human society. She said: â€Å"As far back as our knowledge takes us, human beings have lived in families. We know of no period when this was not so. We know of no people who have succeeded for long in dissolving the family or displacing it†¦ Again and again, in spite of proposals for change and actual experiments, human societies have reaffirmed their dependence on the family as the basic unit of human living—the family of father, mother and children. ’’ In consonance with such research, one of the traits among Filipinos is its close family ties because even up to time immemorial Filipinos are still dependent and interdependent with their families, that even some are already at the age of 40 and having produced so many kids, his existence is still closely related to his Parents. Parents up to the end of the adolescent period of their sons or daughters still have the capacity to support and even provided sustenance to their own sons or daughters. Unlike in foreign countries, particularly in the U. S wherein the their sons or daughters have achieved the age of 18, they are already free to go out of the boundaries of their home and eventually establish a life outside the reach of their family, they can already rent their own apartment and have a job. Which is particularly remote to the traits of a Filipino, if such person was allowed by their parents to live in own life and establish his own stance then eventually such Family would be treated or lookup upon with unbecoming eyes, like such parents is not a worthy parent to father their own child. In Filipino Family, it ordinarily consist of the grandparents, the parents and the children. The Father is the head of the family, but while he rules, the mother governs. For it is the mother that reigns in the home, she is the educator, the financial officer, the accountant, the censor, the laundry woman, and the cook. But above the ruler and the governor are the grandparents, who opinions and decisions on all important matters are sought. Will a newborn child be baptized? The grandparents are consulted and what they say carries much weight. It is the grandparents that have the last word from every decision that the family would make, would they consult a doctor in case the child or sick? The answer depends on the grandparents since they would prefer a herbolario (herb doctor) It is in their experience that will go against any written knowledge that their sons and daughters have achieved, it is with experience that they will use to override you knowledge. And besides such characteristics, one of the predominant characters of the Family is its hierarchical status, since the Philippines is a predominantly catholic country, the impact of such religions echoes even up to the deepest depth of the Family which is embodied in its patriarchal stance. Every decision if you would not be consulted with the grandparent should be consulted with the Father, and nothing more nothing else. The mother may have to say many things, but if the head of the family started to talk then it is the end of the line for is words, would be the law and only the prevailing law of every family. C. Respect for the elders In addition to the power of the grandparents, every grandparents should be treated with respect in all kinds of behavior towards them. In casual conversation, the should be an additional words of respect like â€Å"po† and â€Å"opo. † It is unthinkable for a Filipino do utter words of ingratitude to their elderly. If in other country, they just call their elderly in their own names as oppose to the Filipinos which they approach their elderly in a courteous manner characterized by words of gratitude and respect. And the respect for the elderly includes respect for the elder sister and brother. It is the responsibility of the elder brother to perform the duties of the father and mother to the younger members of the family. One finds that among Filipino family the elder brother or sister sacrifice his career for the sake of the young ones who must have an education. Even after his marriage, the elder brother sets aside a small part of his salary for his younger brother and sisters. The latter, in turn, are expected to look up to their elder brother with awe and respect. Kissing the hands of the parents and old relatives or neighbors as a sign of respect is extended to the elder brother or sister. Among â€Å"old† and â€Å"respectable families,† even cousins kiss the hands of their elder cousins as a sign of respect. D. Fatalistic Filipinos are intrinsically fatalistic. Fatalism is defined as a doctrine that events are fixed in advance so that human beings are powerless to change them. In other words, everything is determined, it is a doctrine that amplifies the subjugation of all events or actions to fate. Philosophically, fatalism generally refer to these ideas, that humans are powerless to do anything other than we can actually do, e. g the power to influence the future which is very similar to pre-determinsm. An attitude of resignation in the face of some future event or events which are thought to be inevitable, that actions are free, but nevertheless work toward an inevitable end, and lastly that acceptance is appropriate, rather than against inevitability. These fatalism is best symbolized in the phrase â€Å"Bahalana,† a phrase that defies translation but which may be rendered loosely as â€Å"come what may. † Can you go through that wall of fire? Bahalana. Are you sure you can convince him to give up his plan of leaving home? Bahalana. There are dangers ahead, Bahalana. Such fatalism has bred in the Filipino a sense of resignation. It is tis that he faces disaster or tragedy with resignation. HE appears indifferent in the face of graft and corruption. He appears impassive in the face of personal misfortune. Yet this â€Å"Bahalana† attitude prevents him from being a crackpot. E. Loyalty As Joyce Mayanrd puts it, â€Å"A person who deserves my loyalty receives it. † Loyalty is defined as a faithfulness or devotion to a person, country, group or cause. For Josiah Joyce loyalty is the willing and practical and thoroughgoing devotion of a person to a cause. The cause has to be an objective one. It cannot be one’s personal self. It is something external to oneself that one looks outward to the world to find, and that cannot be found within. It concerns not one’s own person, but other people. The devotion is active, a surrendering of one’s self-will to the cause, that one loves. Moreover, according to Royce, loyalty is social. Loyalty to a cause unites the many fellow-servants of that cause, binding them together in their service. That is why loyalty to a friend or benefactor is one trait that is very strong with every Filipino. Do him a little favor and he remembers you to the ends of his days. And such trait is best described and characterized as â€Å"utangnaloob. † For the Filipino, friendship is sacred and implies mutual help under any circumstances. A friend is expected to come to the aid not only of personal friend but also to the friend’s family. That is why when the Americans gave their help to oust the Japanese imperial army here in the Philippines, such help was inculcated to every minds of the Filipino people and throughout the history books, the such a friend help you in such detrimental situation. For the Filipino, it is hardly conceivable that the United States should turn out to be an ingrate, knowing that they stood by her in the darkest hour. Such attitude is beyond the comprehension of the Americans, for the latter understands of friendship is different from that of the Filipino. The American is ruthlessly businesslike and will not allow sentimentalism to stand in the way of fulfilling his destiny or objective. This â€Å"ruthlessness† the Filipino does not understand. Thus, it can be considered as a misplaced loyalty, which is an unreciprocated loyalty, because the Americans would only be loyal only to such an end that it will satisfy their desires and needs, and as long as they are being benefited with such they would not care if such things would be treated as sentimental as the Filipino’s see as it is. F. Tendency to be indolent For Luc de Clapiers â€Å"Indolence is the sleep of the mind. † It is a state where the body and mind of a person is idle. Nothing innovative to do nor to say. This trait is common to every Filipino, as Rizal explained, the Filipinos has this tendency to be indolent as the result of the tropical climate which makes even the Westerner indolent in these parts of the paradise. But aside from the warm climate, indolence may partly explained by the abundance with which Nature has endowed the country, a fact which makes the Filipino exert less effort in the belief that he does not have to work hard to make both ends meet. Then too because of the close family and personal ties, the Filipino is assured of three square meals every day if only e would have the nerve to go from one relative to another. He knows that no relative or friend would turn him out and so he imposes himself on his willing or unwilling victims. G. Jealousy For Lawrence Durrell, â€Å"it is not love that is blind, but jealousy. † One of the trait of a Filipino is the feeling of being jealous. For every Filipino does not look with favor on a woman who flirts with several men. To him the sweet heart’s or the wife’s eyes are meant only form him and for no other. Even his closest friend cannot kiss his wife with impunity on the pretext that it is a brotherly kiss. The Filipino, therefore, requires complete faith and loyalty of his wife or sweetheart. A deviation from this unwritten law oftentimes leads to a bloody mess. Among the many examples is when a Jealous husband stabs his wife and hacks his neighbor, It is in a fit of jealousy that a husband stabbed dead his wife then attack the woman’s alleged paramour in barangay Yati, Liloan, northern Cebu. Police said that the husband was furius when his 41 year old wife, admitted to him that she and a married neighbor in 39 years of age had a relationship. It was their daughter who told the police that she heard her mother shouting for help in the 1:30 a. m in that morning. The daughter ran to her parents room and saw her knife wielding father standing in front of her mother, who was lying bloodied on the top of the bed. Her mother died because of multiple stab wounds. It is not only this instance that the jealousy of a betrayed husband was actualize there are many instances wherein such things had happened, bloody killings, are often enough reported in the daily newspapers, and are frequent and usual upshot is jealousy, for to a Filipino blood is required to was the stain of his honor H. Camaraderie â€Å"Pakikisama† or camaraderie among other nation is also one of the best traits that Filipino possesses. The spirit of comradeship makes Filipinos trustworthy beings. The idea of bayanihan was established because of Filipino camaraderie. Filipino shows no elements of deceit, dishonesty and selfishness. Everybody is willing to help one another is the other is in need of help. I. Regionalism Regionalism is defined as a Political subdivision of an area into partially autonomous region, which characterize by loyalty to the interest of a particular region. A Feature of such is an expression, a pronunciation, or a custom, that is characteristic of a geographical area. It is also a quality in literature that is the product of fidelity to the habits, speech, manners, history, folklore, and beliefs of a particular geographical section. That is why a Filipino, does not think in terms of national boundaries but in regional oneness. This feeling is an extension of the closeness of family ties. Invariably, the Filipino believes that the person known to him, no matter how bad is btter than the one unknown to him no matter how. Good. It s been a question that has been asked by many experts who wonder about the differences of tenacity and stamina in people and why is it so. Angela Duckworth was a psychology professor who calculated a theory to organize this concept into a neat word: â€Å"grit†. Grit varies between person to person. It is a concept that can be used to calculate how far are people willing to go for a task and why. It is not because the person is unable to do the same accomplishments as one with a growth mindset, but because they feel discouraged to continue with they face failure. A person with a fixed mindset has â€Å"urgency†, meaning that they are anxious to get things done correctly. When they get back an unsatisfactory grade for their effort, they succumb to stagnation due to the duress of this unexpected occurrence. Simply put, if they could not do it with excellency in one take, they will never get to do it. The concepts on grit and mindsets can be used to define a person s character as well as a character from literature. Characters such as Cassio and Roderigo display a fixed mindset due to their inaction and reaction to failure. Meanwhile, characters like Iago and Othello showcase a growth mindset because of their prioritization and endurance on certain tasks. Through this, the characters in the play can be psychoanalyzed and divided by concepts that can properly explain their actions. Analyzing Existential Psychology - 1263 Words

Running Head: Psychology Personality Psychology Personality Introduction 1.Rollo Mays concept of care, love and will is based on his Existentialist theory that started to gain popularity in Europe after the Second World War. The main concept and aim of the Existentialist theory is that the modern people are less aware of their responsibilities, and are afraid to take up their responsibilities. The importance of the concept of care, love and will, as given by Rollo May is highly important. According to Rollo, care is an active process. The will can be defined as the commitment that an individual makes to commit to another perso n. It is believed by Rollo May that a man is unable to understand the powers, origins and the relationships that love and will have. There may be some cases in which love and will could be superimposed (Ryckman, 2007, p. 423). The potential and heritage that the humanities have can only be appreciated by showing care and love.
